Plato had already offered an answer to this question in a dialogue two thousand five hundred years ago. The Republic, a political work that takes humanity itself as its purpose, has always been there, and it will remain there until politicians begin to take it seriously.

The wealthy, the learned, and even the religions of his time have faded away. Yet there is a body of work that still stands alongside humanity in every corner of the world: Plato’s writings. Even his enemies did not abandon them. Rome preserved the philosophy of Greek culture, which stood on the opposing side, for two thousand years without fundamentally altering it. Later, when Europe had forgotten the Greeks, another perceived enemy, Islam, taught Europe about Greek thought once again. It was not the Greeks’ enemies, but humanity’s need for them, that carried their legacy into the present. In this essay, we will consider The Republic as a work that expresses human rights in one of their most beautiful forms.

Human Rights: A body of universal values that recognizes the rights people possess from birth, including the right to life, freedom, and existence with dignity.

Beauty: The elevation of a being or an idea as a manifestation of aesthetic and moral harmony.

Plato’s Republic is beautiful. Whether or not its enduring prominence across millennia proves its truth, its sublimity must be acknowledged.

Plato’s Republic is not merely a book of political philosophy; it is also a manifesto of beauty that addresses the spiritual and aesthetic needs of human beings. If we ask, “Would we have carried The Republic with us for so long had it not been beautiful?”, the answer is clear: through both its content and its style, the work expresses its philosophical weight with aesthetic refinement.

Plato was wary of fiction because he feared that it might damage the truth. For him, art had to resemble reality. After all, this world was an imitation of another world. Art, itself an imitation of the world, therefore had to embody a reality faithful to its original, its Form. Plato himself produced exemplary works of art. He did not simply make grand claims; he merely recorded the dialogues around him. He did not even speak in his own voice; he simply took note of the conversations taking place around him. How simple and elegant!

In The Republic, the human being comes first. Discussions about human rights and human lives are an attempt to reach the highest form of beauty. As in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the foundation of human rights is laid when individuals free themselves from ignorance and attain the truth. This process is an aesthetic awakening of the soul, for truth, to Plato, is also beauty.

Human Beings, Rights, and Beauty

Plato’s Republic places the human being at its center and brings another dimension of philosophy, the question of rights, into discussion. Human rights mean more than protecting an individual’s physical existence; they also entail safeguarding that person’s spiritual development and aesthetic fulfilment. In the ideal society of The Republic, justice is an aesthetic ordering of human rights. The idea that everyone should occupy a place suited to their nature lies at the heart of Plato’s definition of justice, and it comes to life through the beauty of the human being.

For Plato, beauty is not merely a physical concept; it is also spiritual and moral. Human rights and an individual’s role within the state are directly related to the soul’s striving to attain this beauty. Plato’s philosopher-king is a guide who understands and can put this sublime beauty into practice. A state governed by a philosopher-king nourishes its citizens’ aspirations toward the sublime, truth, and beauty rather than merely directing them by force.

Life and Dialogues

One aspect that distinguishes The Republic from other works is its aesthetic and theatrical style. Written in the form of a dialogue, it offers not merely a text but also a way of life. The dialogues between Socrates and the other characters show that philosophy is not an inert body of knowledge but rather a search that emerges from the heart of life itself. They also help us understand that engaging in philosophy and creating art need not be so difficult. All that is required is a clear and honest expression of the truth. Here lies the simple and elegant message of the work we have carried across thousands of years: honesty.

The Timeless Beauty of The Republic and Its Law Beyond States

Plato’s Republic never sacrifices beauty in its effort to establish human rights. Human beings need beauty because beauty is a gateway to the sublime. The highest reality, the Idea of God, stands as the Form of beauty and goodness. Our task is to turn toward that Form and remain on its path. This is simpler than it may seem.

The work is an indestructible Form of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What a person can offer to a system, and perhaps what is hardest to find, is the truth. At the very least, honesty is something everyone can offer to others. This work of humanity, which has transcended the ages, is nothing more than an honest portrayal of the world around it. The beauty of The Republic comes from this simple and elegant touch.

Even if we can do nothing else, we can at least be honest—and in doing so, lay the foundations of the greatest achievements.

In an age when religion, nationality, and other ideologies are exhausting their shelf lives at an ever-accelerating pace, what remains for us as a purpose in life?
